Visiting Other Academic Libraries
We are members of the national Sconul Access scheme which allows our students and staff to make use of over 150 other Higher Education libraries in the UK and Ireland with borrowing rights available to Postgraduate Students, Part-time Undergraduates and Academic Staff at most institutions; and Reference Only Access available to Full-time Undergraduates.
You can find full details of the scheme here and you can find out more information or join the scheme by asking at one of our library helpdesks or giving us a call.
The Sconul Access site also has links to the library catalogues of most of the libraries in the scheme so you can see if they have the items you want before you visit.
During vacation periods: the 'Sconul Vacation Access' scheme means you can access other University libraries in Sconul (for reference only) without the need to have joined the full Sconul Access scheme just by showing your LSBU ID.
You can also find out what resources are held in many other libraries via the links below
The M25 Consortium is a network of academic libraries around London and the South East of England. Students/Staff are allowed access to many of these institutions via Sconul Access Scheme and Sconul Vacation Access schemes.
You can visit the InforM25 website where you can search the catalogues of over 40 academic libraries across the region simultaneously to see which ones hold the items you are interested in.
The British Library is the nation's biggest library collection with over 14 million books and almost a million journal and newspaper titles. Much of the collection is held at their main building near St Pancras/Kings Cross stations.
If you want to apply to use their collection then admissions staff at the Library will apply their standard admissions criteria relating to “need” and ask for proof of signature (credit card, passport, driving licence) and address (utility bill, bank statement, driving licence) before issuing a reader pass. They will also need to see your student card and any other information about your course to support your application. See the British Library helpsheet (link to HS33) for more details. http://www.bl.uk/aboutus/acrossuk/highered/heresearchers/heservices.html
The COPAC database is created by merging the library catalogues supplied by members of the Consortium of University Research Libraries (CURL). More details about the database are available on the COPAC Content page. It contains over 31 million records from over 50 libraries.
You may search the content of European national libraries.
You can search for any subject across the catalogues of some of the best libraries in the country.
The Serials Union Catalogue will help you locate serials held in the UK. It includes print and electronic versions of newspapers, journals, proceedings and other material of a continuing nature. There are links to other union catalogues.
